Ectovid: In Unreality’s Coffin - Album review

Ectovoid is a death metal band under Everlasting Spew Records, their most recent release In Unreality's Coffin is their third full-length album and my first interaction with the band. The lyrics have a pleasant poetry to them and sort of read like the diary entries of an ancient warlock - in the most complimentary way of course. The harsh vocals paired with the oppressive guitar (both done by Chuck Bryant and Shawn Staszko) and drums (Chris McDonald) gives each track a sense of enormity. I'd say Formless Seeking Form is a stand out track, it's incredibly fun to listen to with some great riffs and is a fab demonstration of the band's skill.

The sound of the album is relatively cohesive which I prefer from an immersion stand point though I do think a lot of the songs have quite a similar impact and that the album would have maybe benefitted from some more variation or from being slightly shorter. Equally, the songs flow nicely and are well curated making for an enjoyable no-skip listening experience.

I've seen a lot of critics likening them to bands like Cannibal Corpse, which I half agree with primarily due to a notable difference in what I believe would be the mixing but if you are a Cannibal Corpse fan I wouldn't say In Unreality's Coffin would be a huge step out of your comfort zone.

I really enjoyed In Unreality's Coffin and am honestly surprised I haven't heard of Ectovoid before as, after listening to some of their earlier works, their general sound is pretty up my street. They're definitely a band I'll be returning to and would recommend to other people.
