TAILGUNNER: Carrying the Torch of Heavy Metal’s Brightest Flame
In a time when heavy metal’s golden age feels like a distant echo, one young British band is turning that echo into a rallying cry. TAILGUNNER, the English quintet newly signed to Napalm Records, are proving that the spirit of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) is not just alive – it’s hungry, confident, and ready for another campaign. With their sophomore album, Midnight Blitz, set for release on February 6, 2026, TAILGUNNER are dropping the musical equivalent of an air raid on a scene that’s been begging for authenticity.
Born from the Legacy of the Greats
Formed in 2022, TAILGUNNER wasted no time carving out their name on stages across the UK and Europe. Their rise has been intense. Built on pure conviction and a devotion to the classic steel of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Motörhead. Yet these aren’t mere disciples playing dress-up with nostalgia. From their inception, TAILGUNNER’s mission has been clear: to evolve the classic British sound without compromising its DNA.
That mission caught the attention of one of their heroes, K.K. Downing, the founding Judas Priest guitarist who helped define heavy metal’s twin-guitar assault. After TAILGUNNER supported Downing’s new project, KK’s Priest, he was so taken by the band’s energy and craftsmanship that he signed on to produce Midnight Blitz himself. The result is more than just an album, it feels like a symbolic passing of the torch.
“TAILGUNNER personify everything that is heavy metal,” Downing says. “They are loud, proud, and descended from everyone in metal that has gone before. Their youthful freshness and rawness make them everything this genre has been missing.”
A New Generation of Metal Crusaders
TAILGUNNER’s sound stands out not because it’s backward-looking, but because it understands what made metal great in the first place: timeless songwriting, showmanship, and sincerity. They aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel – they’re reinforcing the chassis, polishing the chrome, and driving it harder and faster than ever. The band embraces melody and theatricality without irony. Every riff and chorus is delivered with wide-eyed conviction.
That self-assurance has struck a chord across the metal world. In an era when modern heavy music often drifts into hybrid genres or opposite aesthetics, TAILGUNNER offers something purer: the full-blown spectacle of Heavy Metal as it was meant to be heard and seen – soaring vocals, screaming solos, high drama, and unapologetic power.
There’s also something poetic about their rise from the heart of the UK, where heavy metal was originally forged in the industrial grit of the Midlands. Like their heroes before them, TAILGUNNER are using old fire to light new skies. Their connection with Napalm Records signals a new chapter not only for the band but for the modern NWOBHM revival as a whole.
Carrying the Torch Forward
With Midnight Blitz, TAILGUNNER are doing more than honouring their influences, they’re becoming the very kind of band they once looked up to. The tracks balance nostalgia and innovation, tapping into the ineffable power that first made metal a global movement. They are not just keeping the flame alive. They are stoking it higher, ready to pass it to anyone still loyal to the cause.
Whether you discovered heavy metal through the legends or you’re a new listener drawn by the genre’s mythic energy, Midnight Blitz promises to deliver the full experience. They are loud, proud, and thunderous. As K.K. Downing put it, “TAILGUNNER are everything heavy metal should be.”
In 2026, when the siren sounds and the blitz begins, one thing will be certain: the future of heavy metal wears denim, leather, and the name TAILGUNNER emblazoned across its back.
Midnight Blitz – My Track-by-Track Love Letter
Midnight Blitz
Sirens wail and suddenly you’re dropped straight into chaos. This feels like the opening scene of a final battle you didn’t realise you were ready for. The opening guitar is instantly lethal, backed by pounding drums that make head-bopping unavoidable. The lyrics have a really poetic edge to them, and the high notes cut through everything beautifully. It’s heavy without being overwhelming, easy to move to, and then that guitar solo shows up and absolutely steals the show. This is made for live crowds, I can literally picture it as soon as I close my eyes.
Tears In Rain
This one doesn’t waste time easing you in. It bursts forward with energy while still feeling thoughtful and emotional. The longer lyrical lines flow so nicely, giving the song this sweeping momentum, and the harmonies are genuinely epic. I really love the message here too: taking control of your fears, finding yourself, and accepting that death is inevitable without letting it define you. The build toward the end is so satisfying, with soaring vocals from frontman Craig Cairn (I'm so impressed) and intense guitar work, and the abrupt ending leaves you wanting just one more hit.
Follow Me In Death
There’s an immediate shift in mood here – darker, heavier, and way more intense. Everything feels confident and purposeful, from the lyrics to the pacing, and nothing feels forced. It has massive training-montage energy, like gearing up for something huge. One of my favourite moments is wherever the vocals and guitar start to mirror each other so tightly it feels almost hypnotic. The way the music fades out while the vocals linger is such a cool, eerie touch.
Dead Until Dark
Honestly? This track had me sat immediately. The imagery – blood, curses, immortality – is right up my alley, and it’s handled with so much style! The melody is simple but incredibly effective, and the chorus sticks instantly thanks to its tight, memorable rhymes. The guitar solo is a standout, especially when everything else drops away to give it the spotlight. Add in the poetic lyrics and that huge belted note near the end, and it’s impossible not to love.
Barren Lands And Seas Of Red
This song comes charging in at full speed, guitars and drums locked in from the first second. It feels like a battle already in progress, cinematic and relentless. I love how the rhythm shifts throughout – the faster first chorus, the way later choruses stretch into longer notes that slide straight into guitar solos. The abrupt cuts into some of the solos are so satisfying, and the brief drum spotlight gives you a moment to breathe before diving back into the chaos. The fake-out ending followed by thunder is just the cherry on top.
War In Heaven
This track instantly stands out, opening with synths that create a calmer, almost ethereal atmosphere. Everything swells and softens in waves, and when the guitar comes in, it feels perfectly placed. Vocally, this song feels more reflective than angry. There’s a sense of acceptance running through it that really hits. The guitar mimicking the vocal melody is absolutely beautiful, the harmonies in the second bridge are unreal, and the occasional isolated vocals gave me actual goosebumps. The solo feels transcendent, the drums are dramatic without overpowering, and the return to the calm opening at the end feels like being gently set back down. This is my favourite track on the album for sure!!
Blood Sacrifice
After the emotional weight of War In Heaven, this song snaps everything back into intensity without giving you enough time to wipe your tears away! The drums get their moment right at the start, driving the track forward at a relentless pace. The chorus vocals are seriously impressive, especially with the guitar matching the melody so tightly. Lyrically, it leans into darker themes – control, temptation, losing yourself to evil – and it all comes together perfectly. The chanting toward the end, edged with a growl before bursting into a final belt, is such a powerful way to close it out.
Night Raids
This track creeps in with immediate tension, slowly building toward something huge. I felt a strong sense of revenge running through it, with imagery that feels both mythic and ominous. The backing vocals in the bridge are subtle but add so much atmosphere, and the layered harmonies throughout are honestly jaw-dropping. The guitar solos raise the intensity even further, and I love how in the final chorus the music takes a bit of a backseat to really let the vocals and lyrics shine. Even once the vocals stop, the music keeps going, like it’s refusing to let the moment end.
Eye Of The Storm
This one pulls back slightly in pace while still feeling uplifting and powerful. The vocals really take centre stage here, with the instrumentation stepping back just enough to support them. The chorus is such a highlight – poetic, anthemic, and incredibly satisfying melodically. The guitar solo fits perfectly without stealing focus, and the way the final chorus strips things back again to spotlight the vocals feels intentional and effective. The mini drum moment at the end is a really nice finishing touch.
Eulogy
The album closes beautifully, fading in with an almost angelic calm before heavier guitar and drums take over. Everything works together here, nothing feels like it’s trying to outshine anything else. When the vocals come in, the sudden increase in pace adds a sense of urgency that really works. The push and pull between simplicity and speed keeps the song engaging, and the vocals before the final chorus are genuinely stunning. The near “showdown” between guitar and drums before the climax works perfectly, and the fade-out back into a softer, heavenly version of the opening melody feels like the right kind of goodbye.
