RELEASED THIS WEEK: Nian Tong - “What’s on your mind?” (Single)

Nian Tong captions his announcement post for the single: ‘Wrote this one during my first month in London. After years of talking with someone I fell for in Boston, I took a leap and moved to London, only to be ghosted🥹But hey, look what my blind optimism turned it into!’

Despite his roots in musical theatre, beginning his postgraduate degree in 2023, Tong goes for cheeky (you could say ‘Tong-in-cheek’), upbeat indie- pop in his new single. Though, I can hear some really subtle notes of the conventions of musical theatre in the piano backing. The song has notes of owl city and some of the cheesier mcfly songs such as ‘All about you’ and ‘Love is Easy.’ It’s fun, bouncy and playful - definitely a headbopper. The chorus is catchy, with a twinkly background that reminds me of the sound that was on all YouTube videos in 2014.

With an interesting story about love, long distance relationships and heartbreak, Nian is entering a new chapter of his life. His light, airy and buttery voice fits perfectly for this cheesy, upbeat style - though I personally would love to hear some more musical theatre aspects added to his music. “What’s on your mind” will be on Nian’s upcoming album gradually.
